The systemic lupus erythematosus is a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disease, whose causes are still unknown. It affects people of all ages and ethnic groups in the United States are infected every 100,000 individuals 15-50. In general, however, lupus affects women, and mostly women of childbearing age, with a frequency of about 9 times higher than that of men.

Autoimmune diseases (or immunodegenerative) are a major social problem. In the Western world is the third category of diseases more common after cancer and cardiovascular disease. In the USA affected the 5-8% of the population (i.e. 14-22 million people). And the 78-80% of those who suffer is women.

These diseases are caused by the immune system that, at a stretch, is attacking his body instead of defending, in particular T-lymphocytes did not recognize and some cells (the so-called ’self’) to attack and destroy as if they were external factors such as viruses or bacteria. The reason for this self-injury is still unknown.

The lupus is characterized by tissue damage and cell phones and by alternating periods of relative quiescence and periods of relapses of symptoms that may involve one or more organs. In addition, more than half of patients over time develop a systemic organic permanent damage.
Lupus can manifest itself in different forms: rash Amalie, discoide rash, photosensitivity, oral ulcers, non-erosive arthritis, serous, renal manifestations, neurological disorders, hematological abnormalities and immune disorders.

The diagnosis of lupus is based on clinical manifestations and the presence of auto antibodies. In addition, the American College of Rheumatology established diagnostic criteria the presence of which well-documented in the patient’s medical history makes the diagnosis.
Many diseases can be confused with lupus: among these, Jorgen’s syndrome, the syndrome of anti-phospholipids antibodies, the ANA-positive fibromyalgia, idiopathic thrombocytopenia purpura, the drug-induced lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and vacuities initial.

To date, there is no treatment that can cure lupus, and complete remissions in the long term are rare. Therefore it is necessary to plan the therapeutic control of acute stages of developing a subsequent therapy can control symptoms and prevent organ damage.
